In 2013, instrumental music in the Rochester City School District (RCSD) was cut to the level of one teacher assigned to an elementary building two half days per week. A local small business compensated the general music teacher at school 42, Molly Sanchez, for supplementing the part time teacher by giving instrumental lessons to students who participated in the Recreation Department’s after school program. Some of these students went on to become students at the School of the Arts (SOTA). Emily plays trumpet, still keeps in touch with Molly Sanchez and will graduate from the SOTA in 2021.

The following year, the principal of School 22 shared that his building had a music teacher, instruments, an extended school day and needed some volunteers to work with the students. Fifteen New Horizon Band members answered the call and “Play It Forward” was born.
